I was born in the summer of 1846 on a ranch in Kings County, California.
My father had a cattle ranch where I grew up. I was the oldest of three kids. My sister was three years younger and a brother six years younger. My mother worked hard on the ranch taking care of all of us keeping up the house and all the other chores around the farm. As we got older, we would help.
In 1886, at the age of 20, on a cold morning in December four men rode into our ranch and without any warning started shooting at my dad killing him. They went in the house and killed my mother and sister. My brother was still alive when I returned to the ranch after rounding up some cattle that had wondered off the ranch land. After I buried my family, I took off after the men who did this to me and my family.
